I love cross-section maps like this! Kirby from Disaster Tourism and I were chatting recently about drawing these big stick figure battles in that style as kids and wanting to see it make a return.
I haven't thought about all those side style maps I used to draw in grade school. Wow, unearthed memories!
There is such a magical thing to a cross cut map filled with action and adventure. I wonder what in our youth inspired that... probably a mix of 2d side scrolling video games, where's waldo, and the medieval books that had cross section maps.
Yea, those DK cross-section books were huge for me back when so I imagine that had a big part to play! I loved the side picture in the Mothership Warden Operation's Manual that is in that style where it shows all the types of altercations and tension you can build in a battle. Really exciting visually.
I wrote a pamphlet adventure for Running Out of Time that's still in the Old Skull pipeline but my proposed art for it was a cross section map dungeon delve type thing rather than a traditional top-down map with several floors. I'm hoping it works out that it gets that before release!
That's really cool. Love this project, the island setting and all the prep done so far. And I can't wait for LH style goblins.
Where did you find the map? “Makingplaces.org” doesn’t seem to work…been looking for a generator like this
I found it through google image search (since it’s a map of a real place).
I'll be following this with interest!

Makes me want to write something to justify a cross section battle map like the MWO one...
Maybe in a LH Enhanced Edition perhaps.
